Tournament Review

The International Tournament in Varna

In terms of composition, the international tournament in Varna was the strongest event of this kind organized in Bulgaria up to that time. The field included several grandmasters and strong international masters, and the battle was sufficiently even and serious that the foreign players could not take anything for granted.

The first four places were occupied by the grandmasters and by Vlastimil Hort. These players performed most consistently and remained at the head of the standings throughout the tournament, with only the identity of the leader changing from round to round.

Among the Bulgarian players, Nikola Spiridonov and Zdravko Milev performed best. Spiridonov played with great ambition and fighting spirit and fully deserved to finish immediately behind the leading grandmasters and Hort. Milev could perhaps have done even better had he shown a little more fighting spirit, but he nevertheless produced several fine games.

Ivan Radulov scored as many points as Milev, although certain weaknesses were visible in his play. He often drifted into difficult positions from which his tactical skill enabled him to escape, and sometimes even to win. When there were no tactical resources, however, he could be helpless against sustained positional pressure, as in his games with Vasiukov and Hort.

Seven and a half points were required for an international-master norm, but none of the Bulgarian national masters managed to reach it.

Besides the main prizes, a number of special prizes were awarded. Vasiukov received the prize for the greatest number of wins, with six victories, and also for one of the best games of the tournament. Other prizes recognized the best finish over the last five rounds and the best results by foreign players against the Bulgarians and by Bulgarian players against the foreign contingent.

The satisfaction of the participants with the playing and recreational conditions suggested that, with a little more effort, the Varna tournament could become a permanent annual event attracting enough grandmasters to make grandmaster norms possible as well.
