"THE Congress was opened by the Mayor of Hastings, Councillor F. W. Chambers, and Mr. Neill Cooper-Key, M.P., in the beautiful Lower Hall of the White Rock Pavilion, on Monday, December 30th, 1946. Reference was made to Major Everard Woods, of Ulster, who played in the First Class A Section. He learned his chess while in a Japanese prison camp. So enthusiastic had the players become, that a copy, written out by hand, was made of Dr. Tartakower’s famous book, “ A Breviary of Chess,” for the benefit of another camp. The major and Dr. Tartakower shook hands. Source: BritBase viewer page. |
