Tournament Review

1992: Karpov Wins the Tournament with Ease

The Biel Chess Festival is now already a quarter of a century old. The Soviet Union no longer exists. Anatoly Karpov now plays under the Russian flag, Alexander Beliavsky under the Ukrainian flag, and Alexei Shirov under the Latvian flag. The Baltic republic does provide the winner of the master tournament in the person of Alexander Shabalov, who scores an excellent 9.5 points from 11 rounds, but this success stands in stark contrast to the performance of Alexei Shirov, who has to settle for next-to-last place in the grandmaster tournament, only one year after his brilliant tournament victory.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary properly, tournament organizer Hans Suri has invited 13 former World Junior Champions, six of whom take part in the grandmaster tournament: Karpov, Georgiev, Miles, Lautier, Beliavsky and Shirov. Also part of the tournament’s attractions is the presence of former World Champions Anatoly Karpov, World Champion from 1975 to 1985, and Boris Spassky, World Champion from 1969 to 1972, who have been invited as guests of honour at the festival.

While Karpov plays in the grandmaster tournament and wins it convincingly, Spassky gives several simultaneous exhibitions. The chess world is naturally interested in his relationship with Bobby Fischer, his opponent in the 1972 World Championship match. That politically charged contest had triggered an incredible popularization of chess worldwide. A few months later, the two would indeed meet again in Yugoslavia, despite the civil war and the UN boycott. “One can never rule out Fischer’s return to the international world stage,” Spassky says with a grin at a press conference. It is a statement that will soon prove correct.

In his second appearance in Biel, Karpov wants to rehabilitate himself after his recent defeat against the Englishman Nigel Short in the battle for a place in the World Championship final. His elimination from the World Championship cycle prevents another showdown with Garry Kasparov. “Short did not win; I lost,” a visibly dejected Karpov explains. “The level of our games was low.”

“Tolya” has to concede defeat only once in the grandmaster tournament. He loses an endgame with two extra pawns against Kiril Georgiev. The defeat has no consequences, and he wins the tournament by 1.5 points ahead of his conqueror, and even three points ahead of Anthony Miles, who has reconciled with his chess federation. It will, incidentally, be the British pioneer’s last appearance in Biel. He dies in 2001 at the age of only 46.

Newly, there are no more adjourned games, and a game ends after seven hours of play at the latest. The new time control is 40 moves in 2 hours, then 20 moves in 1 hour, and finally another 30 minutes for the rest of the game.

For the first and last time in Biel, the two “arch-enemies” Karpov and Korchnoi also meet directly. As in earlier years, in the 1974 Candidates final and in the 1978 and 1981 World Championship finals, Karpov gets the better of the encounter. Small signs of reconciliation are visible, as a hesitant handshake and a brief analysis after the game are observed.

Financially, the budget has to be cut to a total of 430,000 francs. For economic reasons, four previous tournament events have to be cancelled, including the second invitational tournament. It is clearly becoming increasingly difficult to attract additional sponsors.

Final standings in the grandmaster tournament (Category 16): 1. Anatoly Karpov (RUS) 10.5 points, 2. Kiril Georgiev (BUL) 9, 3. Anthony Miles (ENG) 7, 4. Joël Lautier (FRA) 6.5, 5. Alexander Beliavsky (UKR) 6.5, 6. Viktor Korchnoi (SUI) 6, 7. Alexei Shirov (LAT) 5.5, 8. Curt Hansen (DEN) 5.

Final standings in the master tournament: 1. Alexander Shabalov (LAT) 9.5 points, 2. Ognjen Cvitan (CRO) 8.5, 3. Ian Rogers (AUS) 8. 190 participants.
