Tournament Review

Assessment of the Orense International Tournament

The sixth Orense International Tournament ended last January. Players from nine countries took part, and the event reached FIDE Category 7.

The tournament was highly balanced. The presence of Walter Browne, one of the strongest participants, naturally attracted particular attention, although the American was not at his best at the beginning of the competition.

Orestes Rodriguez, who had been living in Spain for about three years, achieved a fine and deserved victory and obtained his first Grandmaster norm. Four grandmasters occupied the following positions.

Pomar played very cautiously after his recent appearance in Alicante and agreed to several quick draws. Browne began badly, but then produced an impressive recovery and even took the temporary lead. His final opponents, however, were more difficult than those faced by Rodriguez.

Gheorghiu led the tournament at the halfway point, but his defeat against Piasetski affected his confidence in the decisive rounds. Keene played safely. He is a fine opening expert and a predominantly positional player, although he possesses fewer tactical ideas than some of his rivals; even so, he is capable of producing forceful attacking games.

The international masters Hernandez and Durao performed satisfactorily. Castro and Piasetski played below their usual level; the Canadian had recently finished second in Alicante. Sanz produced a second consecutive poor tournament after Alicante and faded badly in the closing rounds.

Tisdall began with two victories, but became demoralised after suffering defeats. The local representative Bello, making his debut in an event of this class, was clearly outmatched.
