Tournament Review

Hecht Wins the 6th Olot International Tournament

From 25 February to 7 March, the sixth edition of the Olot International Tournament was held in the rooms of the Círculo Olotense.

The tournament became interesting from the very first round, when Grandmaster Pomar was surprised by the United States junior champion Rogoff, while the other great favourite, Grandmaster Pal Benko, lost to the Spanish representative Medina. The defeats of the two main favourites in the opening round immediately gave the competition an unusual degree of interest.

After Benko was also defeated by Rogoff in the second round, he lost virtually all hope of taking first place. Going into the final round, the German master Hecht held a half-point lead over his nearest pursuers, Pomar, Andersson and Quinteros.

The games Andersson–Hecht, Pomar–Medina and Quinteros–Benko all ended in draws. Hecht therefore became the sole winner of the 6th Olot Tournament, adding his name to the roll of champions previously occupied by Pérez García, O'Kelly, H. Lehmann and H. Westerinen.

Hecht produced an exceptionally steady performance and completed the tournament undefeated. Pomar, Andersson and Quinteros also performed well overall, particularly bearing in mind how difficult it is to recover from an early defeat in a short competition.

In short, this was another success to add to the history of a tournament which Club Ajedrez Olot has been organising since 1965 for the benefit of Spanish chess. The organisation, directed by Jorge Puig, was also impeccable.
