Tournament Review

From April 26 to May 20, the 7th International “City of Las Palmas” Tournament was held, under the organization of the Chess Federation, with the participation of 16 players from 11 countries.

The Hungarian grandmaster Sax imposed himself in good form. He needed the last round to add his name to the list of distinguished winners of this competition, managing to draw with the Soviet Tukmakov, who five rounds earlier had seemed the virtual winner.

Sax, with clockwork regularity, did not lose heart at any moment and only bent the knee before the Englishman Stean.

Tukmakov lost first place perhaps because of an excess of confidence, thinking that no one could catch him, and also because his opponent was inferior to the Hungarian’s. Nevertheless, both displayed the best chess of the tournament.

Olafsson gave away many points to the leaders, and although he finished half a point behind the top players, this was due to his overwhelming results against the lower-ranked players. His third place is in keeping with his prestige.

Miles and Stean scored 9.5 points, and while Miles’s fourth place was predictable given his standing in world chess, his compatriot Stean improved on previous performances, thus showing that he was advantageously assimilating his experiences with Korchnoi in the Candidates’ matches.

Larsen was in very poor form. More than by his score, by the chess he displayed and the granting of six draws, people also spoke in whispering tones of the Dane’s pacifism, a facet to which we are not accustomed. His defeat by García Padrón, toward the final rounds, ended up collapsing his chances. He was accompanied on 9 points by the Finn Westerinen, who showed continuing progress.

Csom and Mariotti fulfilled expectations well.

Jesús Díez del Corral reappeared after quite some time of inactivity, despite which he showed himself to be in good form. He was the highest-scoring Spaniard and perhaps could have improved his score if he had not given up full points against Mariotti and Panchenko. It will be an unforgivable mistake for the Spanish team at the next Olympiad, above all if he can participate beforehand in another training tournament.

Panchenko and Rodríguez did no more than fulfil expectations, while Javier Sanz — in good form at this point — and García Padrón close the honourable platoon that ended, definitively, with Medina and Domínguez.

In short, another tournament that was organized with the efficiency of always, and in which we must thank the engineers for the facilities that the organizers had in carrying it out, since they almost miraculously saved us from what may be the next year in which we cannot travel to those marvellous Canarian lands.
