Costa Brava International TournamentThe Costa Brava now has its own International Tournament. The chess players of Sant Feliu de Guíxols have made this possible. Among the members of the local club, we must emphasise the extraordinary cooperation of every kind provided by the distinguished Mr Juan Roberto de Robert y Topete, Marquis of Serralavega, whom we saw on more than one occasion setting up pieces, fixing clocks, giving news to the press, and so on. The companies that collaborated in the organisation also provided much help, among them in particular the management of the Hotel Piscina in Port Salvi, as well as the town’s Municipal Corporation. The tournament was directed by Mr Jorge Puig Laborda, while the chief arbiter was National Chess Master Eduardo Pérez, assisted by International Arbiter Juan Torquet. We could say many good things about this first Costa Brava International Chess Tournament, but the most important, in our opinion, was the magnificent organisation and the extraordinary assembly of the playing hall. The organisers truly distinguished themselves in all the innumerable details with which they adorned the event. If we add the perfect sportsmanship shown by the participants, we must conclude that the Sant Feliu de Guíxols Tournament was a genuine technical success. The winner of the event was the Finnish player Westerinen, who in all his games showed the characteristic fighting spirit needed to achieve victory. At times his play even appeared very risky, although that did not prevent him from gaining another success in his important career and at the same time adding a new triumph that will be useful toward another Grandmaster norm. His compatriot from Finland, Tatai, who may also have obtained a norm for the international promotion, finished second. Pomar took third place, tied on points with Austrian Grandmaster Robatsch. Hartoch of the Netherlands, and Pachman, especially the latter, seemed below form. Lengyel also did not produce a very brilliant performance despite his Grandmaster status. Medina completed the group of players holding international titles, and it seemed to us that the Spanish master showed a justified fatigue as a result of his continuous appearances during the season. We saw considerable progress from the local player Pijuán, who managed to draw with four grandmasters; this is a very creditable achievement. As for the other local player, Ibars, it appeared to us that the young Gerona player is not yet ready for competitions of this kind. Closing CeremonyThe prize-giving ceremony was also very lively and was attended by the mayor of the town and Mr José Vilaro, who represented the Catalan Chess Federation. |
