International Tournament of Alicante

From 6 to 17 December, the third edition of the Alicante International Tournament, the “Luis Gimeno Brotons Memorial”, was held in the halls of the Apartotel Meliá in the attractive Mediterranean city.

The event was the most closely contested of the three editions. Grandmaster Arturo Pomar emerged as the winner with 7½ points from 11 games, finishing a full point ahead of his nearest pursuers: Sanz, Orestes Rodríguez and Keene. Even so, Pomar fell half a point short of a grandmaster norm. As the tournament belonged to FIDE Category VII, eight points were required for a GM norm and 6½ for an IM norm.

Pomar did not produce a particularly spectacular tournament—he drew seven of his eleven games—but showed that he had studied the pairings carefully, taking risks when necessary and displaying excellent stamina. His victory was deserved and warmly welcomed by the spectators.

The second pleasant surprise was provided by National Master Sanz. He took second place on Sonneborn-Berger and, more importantly, achieved his first international-master norm, confirming the view that he was one of Spain’s most promising young players. Orestes Rodríguez and Keene joined him on 6½ points. Both played rather cautiously, although the English IM rescued his final standing by defeating Sanz in the last round after 101 moves; the game began at 9:30 in the morning and ended at 3:30 the following night.

In the middle of the table, grandmasters O’Kelly and Westerinen achieved modest results. Tatai and Hartston, especially the latter, did little more than meet expectations, although Tatai’s three decisive losses reflected his fighting approach. Palacios and Durão finished where expected, though more had been anticipated from the Portuguese player after his recent award of the international title. The Biscayan Ochoa did well in his international debut, scoring notable victories over Westerinen and Fragüela. The reigning Spanish champion Fragüela finished last with only 1½ points, in a surprisingly poor performance which should be regarded as a temporary setback.

The magazine then presented the final table and a selection of games with notes by International Master Román Torán.
