The third IBM chess tournament, which begins on Wednesday in Amsterdam, is set up completely different from the two previous tournaments in 1961 and 1962. The main change is without doubt the division into a grandmaster group and a master group, each occupied by ten players, as is also the case every year in Beverwijk at the Hoogoven chess tournament. This split is therefore so important, because it gives more young talented Dutch players the opportunity to compete with foreign masters, which will benefit their routine, and moreover they can work their way up to the grandmaster ranks via this group of masters, a select company, where they can learn a lot. The occupation of this group of grandmasters is considerably stronger than in recent years, and it is particularly gratifying that this reinforcement has been found in the recruitment of a number of young, Eastern European grandmasters, some of whom are in our country for the first time, which considerably increases the topicality of the tournament. The desire to increase the occupation is understandable. If a chess tournament is to really be able to claim the predicate important, then at least a few prominent Eastern European players must participate, and in this respect the tournament committee has succeeded admirably, because the performances of the young grandmasters attract a lot of interest and, moreover, their youthful fire offers the guarantee of enterprising play. Four grandmasters play in the main group, namely the Hungarian Portisch, the South Slavs Parma and Udovcic and our compatriot Donner. They will undoubtedly play a leading role, among them is also without doubt the tournament winner.
