Playoffs

The first category was expanded from six to seven teams for 1957. Bern and Rapperswil drew both promotion matches 4–4. In the replay in Luzern, the unfinished Blau–Bernard game was initially referred for adjudication, but was resumed at the assessors' request. Max Blau won after 112 moves, making the final match score 4–4. The drawing of lots already held in Luzern therefore awarded promotion to Bern. Court then defeated Rapperswil 5½–2½ and retained their place in the first category. The deciding match had been scheduled for 20 January 1957 in Olten. Individual results, Court players first: Tordion–Bernard 1–0, Schilt–Marthaler 0–1, Lardon–Gmür ½–½, Monnier–Trachsler 0–1, Baud–Fischer 1–0, Straub–Schönenberger 1–0, Jacques–Herzig 1–0, Roth–Bäbler 1–0.
