Tournament review

The 2002 girl's championship was not as strong as that from previous year. The top player was rated at mere 2297. There was just one WIM and a few WFMs. Best team according to ELO tables were Ukraine (2295) ahead of Romania (2228) and Yugoslavia (2197).

As it happened, the top three dominated the field from stem to sern. They defeated all other teams with just one exception (Yugoslavia-Slovenia 1-1). As far as the matches between the top teams are concerned, Ukraine first beat Romania 2-0 but lost to Yugoslavia on the next day. The Yugoslavs took the lead but were all in all capped by the Ukraine who squeezed more points out of the weaker opposition. Yugoslavia's top board WFM Dimitrijević lost the decisive game vs WFM Srebrenič of Slovenia. Romiania came third and there was a huge gap between the medal winners and the rest. Best individual result was achieved by Aleksandra Dimitrijević of Yugoslavia (5½/7).
