Tournament review

The 2001 Children's Olympiad was the first one organized exclusively by FIDE, with no support from Mr. Bjelica and Mr. Karpov. Only 8 teams competed in Batatais, of which the hosts fielded two teams and only three teams came outside of South America. The competition was poor as only three players were rated +2200. Sweden (2187) were top seeded ahead of Chile. As it happened the Swedes took the gold with ease but the Chileans came just in fourth place. Brazil took silver ahead of surprise South Africa (their reserve scored 4/4!). Sweden gave best performance in round three as they trounced Chile 4-0.
